The Junta de Castilla y León has published the tender for the installation of a pumping system powered by photovoltaic solar energy in the irrigation community of the ‘Losa Baja’ area, in the province of Burgos. This action will involve a total investment of 282,000 euros, co-financed by 50% between the regional government and the irrigators themselves, and will allow the modernization of irrigation on 1,255 hectares through a more efficient and sustainable system.

The project benefits 111 owners from the towns of Medina de Pomar, Valle de la Losa, and Villalba de la Losa, an area where seed potatoes are produced and distributed throughout Spain for consumption potato production.

The solar installation will pump water throughout the year to the irrigation community’s reservoir. This will provide significant energy independence to the irrigators, as well as cost savings, improving the competitiveness and profitability of their operations. It is planned to install a 245,250 Wp system, which will allow an approximate production of 367,000 kWh/year, resulting in an estimated saving of 130 tons of CO2 emissions per year.

This intervention is part of the energy efficiency program in irrigation promoted by the Junta, with a total budget of 63.4 million euros, aiming to achieve 92,500 modernized hectares in Castilla y León, representing a 50% increase from the initial plan’s goal.

The Department of Agriculture, Livestock, and Rural Development highlights the Junta’s commitment to irrigation sustainability and support for irrigation communities, as an example of the public-private collaboration model that contributes to the rural development of the Community.
