The Plenary of the Cortes of Castilla y León has started its session this Tuesday with a message of remembrance for the five miners from León who died on March 31st in the Cerredo mine, in the council of Degaña (Asturias), in a work accident that «should never have happened.»
This is stated in the ‘Institutional Declaration in the face of the tragedy of the Cerredo mine’ that has brought together all political parties represented in the Cortes to pay tribute «with respect, affection, and commitment» to Amadeo, Jorge, Rubén, David, and Iván, the five miners from Laciana and El Bierzo who «died in the depths of the mountain while earning a living with their effort.»
«They left behind devastated families, friends broken by pain, and a town that still cannot find words to name their sadness,» the political parties have acknowledged through this Institutional Declaration, voiced by the president of the Cortes, Carlos Pollán.
«It seems unbelievable that in 2025 we have to relive scenes from another time; that we have to remember, once again, that nobody should lose their life at work; that occupational safety is not an option, but an obligation,» the political parties added in this text in which the Cortes urge for a thorough investigation of the causes of the accident, for accountability to be established «if necessary,» and for actions to be taken decisively «to ensure that events like this never happen again.»
The Cortes have praised the mining community as «a united, supportive, strong people in adversity and an example of dignity» and have highlighted their courageous defense of their rights, «facing difficulties and demanding a better future for future generations.»
«Today, this institution wants to pay tribute not only to those who have died but also to a legacy of struggle, work, and values,» explained the signatories, who urge not to forget that thanks to the effort of the mining community, many regions in the Community and the country were able to progress.
«Their work helped build the collective wealth from which we all benefit today,» the political parties with representation in the Cortes defended in their «obligation,» they admitted, to «demand more for those who need it most» and to advocate for «real opportunities» for Laciana, El Bierzo, and all mining regions of León and Montaña Palentina.
To achieve this, they call for the defense of the principle of equity with «bold public policies.» «We will do it especially for Amadeo, Rubén, Iván, David, and Jorge; for their families; for the injured colleagues, to whom we send our love and best wishes for recovery. We will do it for all the miners who lost their lives in the galleries because their memory demands justice and their story cannot be forgotten,» the signatories added in the Institutional Declaration.
Finally, with this text, the Cortes of Castilla y León join the grieving families, the mourning of a town, and the demand for a dignified future. «May the sacrifice of these five miners not be in vain. May their names endure in our memory as a symbol of struggle, work, and life,» they concluded.
The reading of the Institutional Declaration ended with a prolonged applause from the procurators, after which the president of the Cortes, Carlos Pollán, requested a minute of silence in this farewell to «the five of Cerredo,» as Amadeo, Jorge, Rubén, David, and Iván are named in another part of the text.
