A hiker has died and another has been seriously injured as a result of a fall in the Valle de Arintero and Rucayo, in the municipality of Arintero (León), as reported by sources from the Emergency Service 112 to Europa Press.
The incident occurred shortly before 2:35 p.m., when the 112 received a call from one of the three hikers who were on an excursion, alerting that his other two companions had fallen, resulting in one of them being deceased and the other seriously injured.
Due to the difficult access by land vehicles, the 112 dispatcher held a conference call with Emergency Health Services (Sacyl), who carried out an initial assessment and instructed the caller on what to do until emergency services arrived, and dispatched a medical helicopter. The 112 also contacted the Emergency Coordination Center, which coordinated the incident, pinpointed the exact location of the victim, and mobilized the rescue helicopter from the Junta de Castilla y León with two rescuers, one of them a nurse, to the area.
Additionally, the 112 notified the incident to the Guardia Civil COS, which sent a rescue helicopter from the Greim (Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group).
The Guardia Civil helicopter reached the location where the hikers had fallen, near Pico Socellerón, carrying the doctor from the Sacyl medical helicopter. The doctor confirmed the death of one of the fallen men and attended to the injured person. Furthermore, the Junta de Castilla y León’s GRS helicopter arrived at the scene to evacuate the injured.
After placing the injured person on a stretcher, they were hoisted up by crane, along with the doctor, to Valdehuesa. There, the medical helicopter was waiting, which provided medical attention and transferred the 40-year-old mountaineer to the León Healthcare Complex.
Additionally, the GRS evacuated the third uninjured hiker to their vehicle, while the Greim took charge of the deceased man and the necessary judicial procedures.
