The town of Piedralaves in Ávila has hosted the start of the CyL Digital Olympiad today, an initiative of the Junta de Castilla y León aimed at boosting digital skills among children and young people in rural areas. The Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation, Luis Enrique Ortega, took part in the official opening of the program, emphasizing «the commitment of the regional government to inclusive digitalization, reaching every corner of the community, starting with children and youth.»
The activity, organized through the CyL Digital Program, will offer free training in digital design, robotics, creative programming, and 3D printing to young people aged 7 to 16. Throughout the summer, it will visit 18 locations in Castilla y León, with activities lasting 10 hours spread over two consecutive days, aiming to promote computational thinking, creativity, and teamwork in a fun and educational environment.
During his speech, the Deputy Minister emphasized that «these Olympics demonstrate that technology can also be a tool to generate territorial cohesion, equal opportunities, and local development.» He also thanked the collaboration of the Piedralaves City Council and encouraged families to register for this pioneering activity that combines digital learning with play and physical activity, sparking curiosity in young people for technology and the professions of the future.
On this first day, more than thirty boys and girls took part in practical activities using tools such as Scratch, Canva, Makey Makey, and 3D printing technology, incorporating sports games to enhance learning.
The CyL Digital Program currently has over 126,000 in-person users and a network of 327 collaborating centers in rural areas, making it one of the benchmarks in national digital literacy public policies.
