Castilla y León | Department of Environment, Housing, and Territorial Planning

The Department of Environment, Housing, and Territorial Planning, through the Patrimonio Natural de Castilla y León Foundation, has published on the State Contracting Platform the specifications for the rehabilitation of a part of the San Salvador de Oña complex in the province of Burgos, intended for a shelter. The tender budget amounts to 1,837,079 euros.

Last December, Councilor Juan Carlos Suárez-Quiñones and the President of the Burgos Provincial Council, Borja Suárez Pedrosa, presented the actions to be carried out in the San Salvador de Oña complex. Among them was the creation of a shelter with 120 places in the old novitiate.

Current Status

The building where the shelter will be installed is owned by the Burgos Provincial Council and is in a deteriorated state due to lack of use. According to architectural reports, it still maintains a reasonable state of conservation.

The construction subject to renovation was part of the San Salvador de Oña complex and was used as a residence, warehouse, and carpentry workshop. It is an original building from 1798 that has undergone various transformations throughout its lifespan. Until 2011, the Monastery of Oña was being used as a residence for the elderly.

The San Salvador shelter will cover an area of 1,920 m2 spread across the three floors of the building adjacent to the Casa del Parque de Montes Obarenes.

The San Salvador de Oña monastery is an important heritage attraction, along with the entire monumental complex of the town of Burgos, which, combined with the landscape of the Montes Obarenes – San Zadornil natural park, makes this area a top-level tourist destination.

Suitability of the Building

The suitability of the rehabilitation of the old novitiate to become a shelter is based on four key aspects:

  • Recovery actions have already been carried out in the complex, such as the Casa del Parque, the old cowshed of the complex. These rehabilitations allow for their conservation and maintenance through the use they receive.
  • The rehabilitation and enhancement of the building is a commitment to sustainability.
  • A building of high heritage value will be restored.
  • A significant part of the building is suitable for use as a shelter.

Actions to be Developed

The future shelter is a building shaped like an «L» and «embraces» an inner plot. Thus, the main wing will be called the east wing, and the lower building will be the west wing.

The east wing has three floors. The ground floor has access from the garden, making it the main entrance. This area will feature rest areas, kitchen, storage rooms, administration, adapted toilets, reception, dining room, cafeteria, and lounges. The rooms will be located on the other floors.

In total, there will be 66 places distributed in 10 apartment-style rooms, each accommodating 4 people, four more rooms for 6 users each, and two individual rooms.

The west wing will be allocated to shared rooms with communal bathrooms. It will have 6 rooms with capacity for between 4 and 24 people, all with bunk beds, totaling 54 places.

Other Actions in the Province of Burgos

In the province of Burgos, as part of the development of the Program of Unique Tourist Infrastructures in Protected Natural Areas, work is being done on the detailed actions in ANNEX I.
