La Junta estudia implementar señales inteligentes para detectar ciclistas en carreteras autonómicas

  • Signals have been installed on a regional road and another provincial road in Soria, as a pilot project, which will be used to collect data until the end of the year to later develop their implementation throughout the Community
  • Cyclists must install a free app that will activate luminous warnings as they pass through these routes via a GPS signal

The Junta de Castilla y León is advancing in improving road safety in the Community’s roads through its ‘Digital Road Model’. On this occasion, it has presented in the province of Soria a study on intelligent signaling for detecting cyclists on regional roads.

The Minister of Mobility and Digital Transformation, José Luis Sanz Merino, has visited the location of one of these signals, which will be placed on the SO-800 and on the SO-P-6019. «Road safety on our roads is a priority that must reach all users who travel on them,» he explained. «Putting the best of technology at the service of people is a priority for the Junta and in this case it reaches the cyclists who travel our roads every day,» he added.

Its operation consists of a luminous warning signal of the presence of cyclists on the road, which is made up of a closed aluminum box with a perimeter profile. «For its detection, an App has been developed for cyclists that allows the activation of signals, warning vehicles of their presence in a specific section through a GPS signal.»

This intelligent signaling has the following features:

  • A fixed labeling area ‘ATTENTION’ and a cyclists danger sign.
  • A luminous area with the text ‘CYCLISTS ON ROAD’ made up of high luminosity amber LEDs.
  • The signal is complemented by two LED spotlights that are activated together with the text to generate greater attention to the driver.

This pilot program will conduct a study on a regional road and another provincial road in Soria, whose data, by the end of the year, will be used to develop its installation on roads in the nine provinces of the Community.

Digitalization in roads

The Junta de Castilla y León has invested 3.5 million euros in the implementation of digitalization in roads. The ‘Digital Road Model’ is a platform that makes it possible to manage all the information related to the Community’s roads.

With this model, it will be possible to have a digital visualization of the road, an inventory of assets, and all georeferenced information from a comprehensive perspective, which will translate into a significant boost to the improvement of road maintenance and the consequent benefit for citizens.

Intelligent Signaling

Another initiative of the Government of Alfonso Fernández Mañueco is the intelligent signaling on roads as an important tool to prevent and reduce the number of accidents on regional roads where wildlife is abundant.

Based on these patterns, the Department of Mobility and Digital Transformation has proceeded to install thirty panels that provide drivers with real-time information on the risk of wildlife presence on the road. Different warning signals are emitted depending on the level of risk at any given time, according to algorithms designed by the University of Salamanca.

The signal is off if the possibility of animal presence is low; amber, if the level is high; and red, when the risk is very high. These intelligent signals currently cover 80 kilometers of the regional road network in the provinces of León, Palencia, Burgos, and Soria; and, since they have been installed, they have yielded very satisfactory results, as evidenced by a 22% reduction in accidents.
