Castilla y León | President of the Junta de Castilla y León
The President of the Junta de Castilla y León, Alfonso Fernández Mañueco, participated on Wednesday in the inauguration of the new headquarters of the Spanish Association Against Cancer in Burgos. He reaffirmed his firm commitment to improving the quality of life and healthcare for oncology patients and highlighted the successful collaboration between the regional government and this organization, focusing on supporting patients and their families, social awareness, and research advancements.
Among the actions promoted by the Junta in the region, Fernández Mañueco emphasized the extension of colorectal cancer screening up to 74 years of age, as well as the updating of cervical cancer screening with improvements not available in other regions. Additionally, Castilla y León has the most comprehensive breast cancer detection programs, from ages 45 to 74.
The region also has twice as many high-tech healthcare equipment compared to the national average, including genomic sequencers, oncology biobanks in seven hospitals in the region – including the University Hospital of Burgos – and advanced therapies such as immunotherapy and CAR-T. Furthermore, the regional government is implementing all available diagnostic and therapeutic innovations, providing increasingly personalized and humane care.
Furthermore, with the goal of improving patient care and reducing travel for oncology patients, the Junta de Castilla y León is progressing in the implementation of satellite radiotherapy units in the region. The one in Ávila is already operational, the one in Soria will start functioning in the coming days, and projects in Palencia, El Bierzo, and Segovia are advancing, with a total investment of 35 million euros.
Close collaboration with the AECC
During his speech, Fernández Mañueco highlighted the close collaboration between the Junta de Castilla y León and the Spanish Association Against Cancer in the educational field, aiming to raise awareness from an early age; in the hospital and primary care network throughout the region, to ensure support and assistance to patients and their families; and also in psychosocial care, with the participation of specialized professionals from the association.
Specifically in Burgos, the regional government, in collaboration with the University of Burgos, has established the Biosanitary Research Institute, which will strengthen oncological research work both in the province and throughout Castilla y León. Additionally, programs have been expanded to improve the management of oncology drugs throughout the region.
