The Castilla y León Regional Government activated the search protocol for a brown bear specimen on Saturday after the mortality sensor of the GPS tracking device the animal had installed since September 2024 was activated.
By late morning, environmental agents from the Castilla y León Regional Government were able to confirm that the animal was dead, showing signs of scavenging predation.
The lifting of the specimen, carried out jointly by the environmental agents of the Castilla y León Regional Government and the Civil Guard, was completed by early Saturday afternoon. The remains of the specimen were transferred to the Wildlife Recovery Center of the Castilla y León Regional Government in Burgos, where the specimen’s necropsy was performed today.
During the anatomopathological examination of the brown bear’s corpse, it was confirmed that it was an elderly specimen with low body condition. The presence of metallic elements compatible with a gunshot was ruled out. Due to the condition of the specimen, with high post-mortem predation signs, the cause of death could not be determined. Based on the analyzed information, the death may be compatible with natural causes. In any case, samples have been collected and will be sent to the toxicology laboratory to rule out possible intoxication.
