Citius, Altius, and Pisuerga are the names chosen to ‘baptize’ the three chicks of the booted eagle nesting in Campo Grande by the citizens of Valladolid, with the other three proposed names, Altius, Fama, and Campo, being discarded.
A week ago, the City Council invited Valladolid residents to participate through their website in an initiative to name the three booted eagle chicks nesting in Campo Grande, who will soon take their first flight.
Citius was chosen in first place (with 693 votes), followed by Fortius (with 627 votes) and, in third place, Pisuerga (with 626), as reported by municipal sources to Europa Press.
These are the three most voted options to ‘baptize’ these young eagles, who will likely travel to the African Sahel in early autumn to spend the winter there. The names that were discarded were Altius, Fama, and Campo (with 624, 453, and 425 votes, respectively).
As explained by Mayor Jesús Julio Carnero in Campo Grande a few days ago, this is «an unusual, unprecedented event that must be protected and valued within the city of Valladolid because it is extremely rare for a pair of booted eagles to build their nest within the urban area,» especially in a garden away from the riverside forest like the other known pairs in the city.
HOPE FOR THEIR RETURN
In this regard, Carnero thanked the citizens who participated in the initiative through their votes and also expressed hope that these specimens may return to Valladolid territory next spring.
Thanks to their monitoring, on July 2nd, through the placement of GPS/GSM transmitters with a small solar panel, their flight from the nest and aspects related to their reproductive biology and conservation issues, both nationally and during migration and wintering areas, will be known later.
This circumstance becomes even more unique considering that last year, the adult eagle pair nested in the same tree, in the same nest, and successfully raised two young females.
