President of the Junta de Castilla y León
The President of the Junta de Castilla y León, Alfonso Fernández Mañueco, held a meeting on Wednesday in Madrid with the CEO of AB Azucarera, Juan Luis Rivero, where he conveyed the firm rejection of the regional government to the restructuring announced for Castilla y León by the company, as well as its total commitment to maintaining employment and defending the sugar beet sector in the Community.
During the meeting, Fernández Mañueco informed the company’s representatives that the regional government considers the La Bañeza factory to be viable and, therefore, has requested the company to consider changing the ERE to ERTE, a possibility that the Junta de Castilla y León will pass on to union representatives and the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy, as it is the Spanish Government that is competent in this matter.
Likewise, given the situation facing the La Bañeza factory in León, the president has asked the company to explore an alternative or industrial activity parallel to the sugar factory itself.
Finally, Fernández Mañueco has obtained Azucarera’s commitment to guaranteeing agricultural activity and the logistics and service companies linked to this economic activity, as well as covering the additional cost of transporting sugar beets from their place of origin to the Toro plant in Zamora.
Also present at today’s meeting in Madrid were Salomé Santos, Agricultural Director of Azucarera, and Isabel Vasserot, Head of Institutional Relations and Sustainability at the company, as well as the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, and Rural Development, María González Corral.
